by Doris Caceres-SchumickBecause of our common interest in Vincent van Gogh’s art me and Lana Turner (a fellow starving cowriter) attended the Columbus Museum of Art’s SOLD-OUT Mozart to Matisse chamber music concert performed by a quartet from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra paired with a talk by the museum’s chief curator emeritus David Stark on art featured in the exhibit “Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources”. Lana and I spent two-hours walking through the van Gogh exhibit which included 17 of his masterful works, mixed in with paintings, prints and sculptures by artists who influenced him, aka “his sources”. I expected “his sources” to be only influencers of art. So, I became quite excited to learn that van Gogh was also inspired by music (he even took piano lessons). AND, even more excited to see in one wing of the exhibit tabletop display cases with early editions of BOOKS! Van Gogh was an avid reader, sometimes reading the same books over and over again. Some of these books included:
He had such a passion for books that he considered writers to be literary masters! Van Gogh found personal inspiration and consolation in books. He found artistic motivation in the rich descriptive language of the vast selection of novels, poetry, and essays he immersed himself in. This immersion led him to develop his own sophisticated voice, as evidenced in the hundreds of letters he wrote. This beautiful exhibit, as well as other van Gogh related programs lasts through February 6th, 2022, before moving on to Santa Barbara, California. I highly recommend taking the time to visit. Check out the photos below of our visit. I hope you've enjoyed reading this post about Vincent van Gogh’s sources. What are your sources? What or who influences you in your life? Something to ponder…
